What does a virtual assistant do?
Virtual assistants handle admin, email, scheduling, customer support, social media, research, and travel booking for busy founders, professionals, and small businesses. Some VAs specialise in one area, such as executive support or social media management.
Skills that get you hired
Strong written communication, organisation, reliability, and familiarity with Google Workspace, Slack, Notion, Trello, Zoom, and Calendly are the basics. Add a specialisation like social media, bookkeeping, or customer service to charge more.
Where to find clients
Start with LinkedIn, Upwork, Fiverr, Belay, Time Etc, and remote job boards. Many Nigerian VAs also find clients through Facebook groups, Twitter communities, and referrals from their first clients.
Build a tiny portfolio
Before you have clients, create sample work: a well-organised inbox cleanup plan, a social media calendar, a travel itinerary, or a research report. Show that you can think like a VA, not just say you are one.
What to charge
Entry-level Nigerian VAs often charge $3–$8 per hour or $200–$500 per month per retainer. Rates rise quickly with specialisation and proof of reliability. Track your time and deliver before deadlines.
