NGO Startup Checklist for Nigeria

Phase 1: Before you register

• Define the problem you are solving and who you are solving it for.
• Write a clear mission statement, vision statement, and theory of change.
• Identify your target beneficiaries and geographic focus.
• Research existing organisations doing similar work. What is your unique angle?
• Form a founding team with complementary skills and shared values.

Phase 2: Legal registration

• Choose a legal structure: incorporated trustees (most common for NGOs), company limited by guarantee, or trust.
• Register with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).
• Prepare a constitution or memorandum and articles of association.
• Open a dedicated bank account in the organisation's name.
• Register with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and state tax office where required.

Phase 3: Governance and systems

• Form a board of trustees or advisory board with clear roles.
• Develop policies: financial, human resources, child protection, gender, procurement, and safeguarding.
• Set up basic accounting and record-keeping systems.
• Create a simple organogram showing roles and reporting lines.
• Decide how decisions will be made and documented.

Phase 4: Funding readiness

• Build a one-page concept note you can share with potential donors.
• Develop a realistic budget for your first year.
• Research grant opportunities that match your mission.
• Start small: pilot one activity and document the results.
• Build an online presence: website, social media, and credible contact information.
